What is Schema Therapy? What is Schema Therapy for?

Growing from a CBT starting point, Schema Therapy emerged as a longer-term therapy and its’ framework will significantly increase your understanding of why you are the way you are, why you feel the way you do and why you do what you do.

Schema Therapy goes ‘deeper’ than CBT by identifying and exploring, in more depth, engrained patterns or themes relating to significant experiences.

It focuses on negative beliefs, feelings and behaviours that have started in childhood and are often repeated (consciously or not) throughout adolescence and adulthood.

For example,

  • You may notice recurring unwanted patterns or themes in your relationships and the partners you are attracted to.

  • You might find you are always the one to back down in relationships or avoid confrontation at all costs.

  • You might feel resentful in friendships and find you always seem to bend over backwards for people.

  • You struggle to say no to people without feeling anxious, guilty or feeling like a bad person.

  • You might notice how indecisive you are when it comes to choosing something to wear/do or even what career to pursue.

  • You find you are run down and exhausted or experience burn-out a lot and you can’t seem to sit still and relax because you always feel like you should be doing something.

  • You always seem to be worried about what other people are thinking and feeling.

How to know if Schema Therapy is for you:

You’ve had therapy before and not found it helpful

or

You’ve found therapy did help but the benefit didn’t seem to last

or

You want to delve deeper and really get to the root cause and understand your anxiety and low self-esteem and/or people-pleasing ways.

or

You ‘get’ what you need to do to help break bad habits / unhelpful behaviours but don’t ‘feel’ you can implement the changes

or

You are making changes but not feeling better

I use Schema Therapy to help increase your understanding and awareness of the reason you feel and think the way you do and the cause of your unhelpful habits and behaviours.

I utilise elements of its’ proven techniques to address the underlying cause of your difficulties so you can change those unhelpful patterns of which you seem to keep getting stuck. You won’t just ‘get it’, you’ll ‘feel it’. Feel free to book in for a free initial call and we can chat more about how Schema Therapy can help and you can ask me any questions you have.

My ultimate aim is for you to understand and address the cause of your anxiety, increase your self-esteem and confidence so you can free yourself from people-pleasing type tendencies and burn-out and start living life how you truly want to live it, unapologetically.
